<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-k-G-6UmpQMM/Ukz9oL5NMuI/AAAAAAAABH8/iAuaVjlZic4/s1600/rift_mage_2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="356" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-k-G-6UmpQMM/Ukz9oL5NMuI/AAAAAAAABH8/iAuaVjlZic4/s640/rift_mage_2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I am sooo excited for everything about this costume, and I think I have it planned out pretty well so far.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-egBBGqkh-Pc/Ukz_7b5wbNI/AAAAAAAABIU/tUdwiBpAs18/s1600/IMAG1749.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-egBBGqkh-Pc/Ukz_7b5wbNI/AAAAAAAABIU/tUdwiBpAs18/s640/IMAG1749.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
With Worbla, and LED lights / EL wire, and craft foam, and a whole lot of sewing, this is definitely a project where my notebook is full of more taking notes and writing instructions rather than just jotting down lists and sketches.<br />
<br />
Since the Worbla and lights part will need a bit more planning (and purchasing) and will have to happen at the same time, I thought I'd start off easy.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ZYEwdzf5afQ/Ukz_6_uhn-I/AAAAAAAABIY/qeIlvCrSTu4/s1600/IMAG1750.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ZYEwdzf5afQ/Ukz_6_uhn-I/AAAAAAAABIY/qeIlvCrSTu4/s640/IMAG1750.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Craft foam is like, $.60 at Joann.<br />
<br />
Now there are a lot of tiny details in this costume, and I dunno what material the game is trying to make the gold pieces all over the fabric look like, but they match the metal of the mask and other armor pieces.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-SQ7w1oxemI8/Uk0BXhOpuXI/AAAAAAAABIk/uM7g0zi4t04/s1600/rift_mage_1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="433" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-SQ7w1oxemI8/Uk0BXhOpuXI/AAAAAAAABIk/uM7g0zi4t04/s640/rift_mage_1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
But I really don't want to use the same material in the armor as I do in the fabric. I have to sit in it and things. And also fabric likes to move around. And also that would be expensive. And embroidery / fabric markers are 'ugghhh' and 'mehhhh' respectively.<br />
<br />
I read a lot of tutorials on different ways to make different armor, and after reading that the craft foam route is super flexible and can often be sewn onto fabric, I think that that is the perfect way to go.<br />
<br />
Well, I hope so anyway. That is why I'm starting out my test piece.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ldsFxwFHub0/Uk0CYoWD0nI/AAAAAAAABIw/WO1jW8nwGsI/s1600/IMAG1752.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ldsFxwFHub0/Uk0CYoWD0nI/AAAAAAAABIw/WO1jW8nwGsI/s640/IMAG1752.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm really not sure if the front piece on the bodice should be made out of this material, but I thought that this was a fine enough shape to try out these techniques. </div>
<br />
I'm following <a href="http://entropyhouse.com/penwiper/costumes/helmsdeep.html" target="_blank">this tutorial</a> to seal and paint it, and I figure if these can be used for an entire suit of armor, it can be used for a few of the smaller pieces.<br />
<br />
So far painting it with watered down glue to seal it is working pretty well. I gotta say I'm not doing the one-coat-every-day-for-a-week thing with this diamond, but I will do another test piece where I do do that and then we shall compare them and see which works best for... all of those small pieces all over the outfit.<br />
<br />
<br />
The moral of this story--if I don't make tremendous progress over the next year and finish super super early, then I am a horrible failure.</div>

<br />
I finished my costumes every so slightly earlier than usual and they were a tremendous success!<br />
<br />
<br />
<b>First up: Steampunk-Pokemon-Trainer-Generic</b><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9mzi_8k2HiY/Ui4uCrlAXRI/AAAAAAAABD8/jgEAlPdsSII/s1600/1006344_2621498572976_194089132_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9mzi_8k2HiY/Ui4uCrlAXRI/AAAAAAAABD8/jgEAlPdsSII/s400/1006344_2621498572976_194089132_n.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-NjFHLa3FSdo/Ui4uChYCBXI/AAAAAAAABEU/Cx1tKxnSLYE/s1600/1185776_2625604275616_2139714425_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-NjFHLa3FSdo/Ui4uChYCBXI/AAAAAAAABEU/Cx1tKxnSLYE/s400/1185776_2625604275616_2139714425_n.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The corset was a little warm, but I was okay with it open or closed. It fit very well so I was super pleased with my first ever vest! Aw yeah.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-7n0pxWVnz1k/Ui46cWWKhCI/AAAAAAAABFY/Wg2qzbg35ew/s1600/IMAG1706_BURST003.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-7n0pxWVnz1k/Ui46cWWKhCI/AAAAAAAABFY/Wg2qzbg35ew/s400/IMAG1706_BURST003.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Ignore the wrinkles--it spent the night on the floor...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm glad that the bag / leg holster thingy allowed me to walk. I'm also glad that my red socks worked out! I was worried about introducing too much color, but I think it looked just fine. Especially with the gloves. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Everyone else seemed to love it, so yeah!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Next up: Kelari!</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/--H41QWBdsPU/Ui4uDKumjKI/AAAAAAAABEE/5dEIxfGLyBM/s1600/1236478_2625657116937_1378043942_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/--H41QWBdsPU/Ui4uDKumjKI/AAAAAAAABEE/5dEIxfGLyBM/s400/1236478_2625657116937_1378043942_n.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I was sooo nervous about painting my face. I was worried about it melting off or looking splotchy, or not matching my arms, but somehow it all worked out!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I ended up mixing the two paint colors I bought with my sponge while applying it. I don't know why it came out even, since I barely practiced. But it's good that it did!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Ibr4TPRQHFM/Ui4uDDeZZzI/AAAAAAAABEQ/B1S-g18xPA4/s1600/1236738_2623824311118_1149628613_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Ibr4TPRQHFM/Ui4uDDeZZzI/AAAAAAAABEQ/B1S-g18xPA4/s320/1236738_2623824311118_1149628613_n.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Cj9aR8mxPRY/Ui4uCkT4twI/AAAAAAAABEA/UUGLY-sksgE/s1600/1185985_2623824631126_1043190407_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Cj9aR8mxPRY/Ui4uCkT4twI/AAAAAAAABEA/UUGLY-sksgE/s320/1185985_2623824631126_1043190407_n.jpg" width="240" /></a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Wearing ears was also a lot of fun! First time doing that.</div>
<br />
I was supposed to do all of this last year, but we didn't wake up in time for me to do it.<br />
Also I had no plans or any knowledge of how to do it properly with setting powder and such. I also didn't have the right paint color. Or armsocks. Or anything at all.<br />
So I'm glad I waited.<br />
<br />
I'm very happy with my armsocks as well. Whoever came up with this was a genius. It's so much better than trying to paint my entire body, which would have been the worst thing ever in the whole world.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tPtNdzGxg84/Ui46YdZmYKI/AAAAAAAABFA/zUsYLoikjbI/s1600/IMAG1541.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tPtNdzGxg84/Ui46YdZmYKI/AAAAAAAABFA/zUsYLoikjbI/s400/IMAG1541.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-oUw0lQXafqM/Ui47kw76XdI/AAAAAAAABFs/mNUaUxHEJsU/s1600/IMAG1654.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-oUw0lQXafqM/Ui47kw76XdI/AAAAAAAABFs/mNUaUxHEJsU/s400/IMAG1654.jpg" width="225" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
Super pumped that the paint color was just right and barely rubbed off at all!<br />
The neck was really the only problem area, but it wasn't that bad. Also I had to touch up under my nose, so that was fun to do in the corner of Darkmoon Faire.<br />
<br />
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The only drawback to this excellently accurate Rift costume was that everyone thought I was a Night Elf while we were at the World of Warcraft party. I let them take pictures and stuff because whatever.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br />
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I shall rate the success of my weekend based on how many people asked to take pictures of both of my costumes, which was about 10 million. So hooray!</div>

Action shot!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_7iy3VA0Z9U/UhmpNFGfzSI/AAAAAAAABCc/klvGQ5I4klU/s1600/IMAG1515.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_7iy3VA0Z9U/UhmpNFGfzSI/AAAAAAAABCc/klvGQ5I4klU/s640/IMAG1515.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Then came the gym badges. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Drawn in Illustrator, printed and mounted onto mount board, layer of resin on top, ready to go!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-SNVh8OD5Hnk/UhmpOaDUyrI/AAAAAAAABCo/EfvQpyjN4ic/s1600/IMAG1518.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-SNVh8OD5Hnk/UhmpOaDUyrI/AAAAAAAABCo/EfvQpyjN4ic/s640/IMAG1518.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-FKGxnqfjsA0/UhmpNk77htI/AAAAAAAABCg/VxupyGZkozI/s1600/IMAG1524.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-FKGxnqfjsA0/UhmpNk77htI/AAAAAAAABCg/VxupyGZkozI/s640/IMAG1524.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The vest finally got finished up with some awesome buckles and such. I'll probably fasten those straps down a little.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-oOggYdae45M/UhmpPNYCS7I/AAAAAAAABCw/kXS6KPgvHYE/s1600/IMAG1529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-oOggYdae45M/UhmpPNYCS7I/AAAAAAAABCw/kXS6KPgvHYE/s640/IMAG1529.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I've also got my fingerless gloves freshly fingerless. We'll see how it all looks together later.<br />
Now: bedtime.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05458756729114685560noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2186252782670146063.post-48331229172033714912013-08-03T21:37:00.002-04:002013-09-26T13:29:26.933-04:00Dragon*Con 2014Welp. I think I want to know what I want to do next year.<br />
<br />
I've been waiting to be able to do a super amazing kick-ass costume for a long time. And finally after doing all of my practice costumes up to this point, and after watching some videos about Worbla, I think I can make my dream a reality.<br />
<br />
I want to make a costume that has a lot of details and armor and glowing bits and fitted bits and flowy bits, and I think I found just the thing.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Qpu9bwQL6wg/Uf2u-bDRJmI/AAAAAAAABAM/n_6GKTLrvvw/s1600/Nyx's_Set_Female.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="350" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Qpu9bwQL6wg/Uf2u-bDRJmI/AAAAAAAABAM/n_6GKTLrvvw/s400/Nyx's_Set_Female.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Rift's awesome mage robes! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I love Rift, but I didn't love my character I'd been playing. Deciding on one at first was really really really hard. I played a Cleric for a little bit a few weeks ago, but a Cleric just isn't me. And my old Kelari Rogue isn't me either.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
That's when I realized that Mages are what I like to play best. Sure huge hammers are awesome, and tanking is awesome, but using fire magic is the awesomest of all. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I've done it the longest and in the most games, and I just can't escape it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So I shall make my favorite mage armor.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Figuring out that helmet will be fun.</div>

They said it would be in in 2 weeks and that they would call me.<br />
<br />
Yesterday, June 17 (4 weeks later) I hadn't gotten any calls so I went in to ask them what the heck they were doing over there with the fabric I'd paid for.<br />
<br />
Well they had no idea where it was so they said they were going to get someone who would come in the next day to track it down.<br />
<br />
Well he just called and said that the fabric that I bought had been discontinued.<br />
BUT there was some in Massachusetts and it was on it's way.<br />
<br />
It should be here in 10 business days.<br />
<br />
I have no idea how long it will take me to make my garment with it, so... this is all stupid. Especially since I'd ordered it so early.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
In other news, I'm working on the rest of my costume in the meantime...<br />
<br />
Including my Pokeballs!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-YMi-2lc5pUI/UcEeDH3WiEI/AAAAAAAAA8A/rHyLAlXAmoM/s1600/pokeballs_painted.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-YMi-2lc5pUI/UcEeDH3WiEI/AAAAAAAAA8A/rHyLAlXAmoM/s400/pokeballs_painted.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I was wondering how I was going to make these and attach them to a belt. They need to be light, and fairly round and perfect, easy to color / paint, and not fall off.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And then I saw online someone had made them out of wooden balls. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So I went to Hobby Lobby and found the perfect sized balls with a flat side. So I bought myself some paint and superglue and won the day!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-iwHr0rx143Q/UcEeDRiDpWI/AAAAAAAAA8I/w2IIrLb3FfU/s1600/pokebelt.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-iwHr0rx143Q/UcEeDRiDpWI/AAAAAAAAA8I/w2IIrLb3FfU/s400/pokebelt.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-OtoF8PvdX8Q/UcEeDYDo9DI/AAAAAAAAA8E/-XJARgtFHF4/s1600/super_glue.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-OtoF8PvdX8Q/UcEeDYDo9DI/AAAAAAAAA8E/-XJARgtFHF4/s400/super_glue.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Superglue holds WELL</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I got a little bit of superglue on my fingers, but the moral of this story is that if something bumps up against these, the buckle will break before these fall off.<br />
<br />
Now I'm running out of things to work on without my fabric...Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05458756729114685560noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2186252782670146063.post-85733109767622893362013-05-26T01:12:00.000-04:002013-05-26T01:12:19.868-04:00The Time Has Come!And I'm not sure I've ever started working on my Dragon*Con costume this early.<br />
<br />
<br />
Deciding on a costume for this year was hard. I haven't played any new games or seen any new shows that I would want to pull an outfit from.<br />
<br />
So I reminded myself of something that I've wanted to make for a long time.<br />
<br />
Each year I am so envious of all of the gorgeous Steampunk costumes everyone has. They're so detailed and amazing. It would be so fun to build an intricate costume like that.<br />
<br />
But I don't have much exposure to Steampunk things outside of Dragon*Con. I don't read many comics or books or watch shows that have any sort of characters or styles that I could pull from. Especially those that are meaningful in anyway to me.<br />
<br />
So I'm doing what any true Con-goer should:<br />
Make a Steampunk version of something that's not Steampunk.<br />
<br />
And I chose a Pokemon trainer.<br />
<br />
Most definitely something that I can pull from life experiences.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ONxf5UROrIw/UZ1wBJ8NHyI/AAAAAAAAA5s/BZyea0f5Zkk/s1600/IMAG0579.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ONxf5UROrIw/UZ1wBJ8NHyI/AAAAAAAAA5s/BZyea0f5Zkk/s400/IMAG0579.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Fabric swatches and a bunch of awesome buckles.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So we're starting off with a pretty sweet color scheme. I'm trying to keep it bright and cheerful, with a little bit of contrast in some of the darker [faux] leather accents.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I've got yellow as the focal point, backed up with white and grey and tan.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Pokemon screenshots contain a lot of red, blue, green and yellow. Red is one that I'm still contemplating trying to add. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It's weird finding a balance between a style that's mainly brown, and a style that's mainly primary colors.</div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
First Things First: I was going to work on the actual clothing first, since it's very finicky and I'm not super good at it yet, but the fabrics I want are not in stock and will take 2 weeks to get in.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So... New First Things First: I still need to have an awesome leg holster full of pockets and things. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1NY-ZSR9u-U/UZ1wBfqDR5I/AAAAAAAAA5w/iYG8X8Qz3O8/s1600/IMAG0581.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1NY-ZSR9u-U/UZ1wBfqDR5I/AAAAAAAAA5w/iYG8X8Qz3O8/s400/IMAG0581.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Bag minus interesting and finishing details</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There was supposed to be a place for a Pokedex, but I got so caught up with the need to carry various Con necessities that I forgot about it. </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
But my bags so far are pretty awesome. Now I just have to attach them to my body.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I do wish that my fabric wasn't so shiny. I wanted everything to be very matte and very solid, but this was the only fabric I could find at my lovely local fabric store that had both the texture and the color I wanted. And I already had some of it from last year to get me started.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And I've made most of my bags with it already.<br />
<br />
Once I buy a little more fabric and a few more buckles, I'll be able to finish this thing!</div>

<br />
<img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-DBoRelM0ix0/UHkCPT_qQCI/AAAAAAAAAwE/2IdUbv3oNak/s320/IMG_1013.JPG" width="320" /><br />
<br />
None of the pictures of me in my costume turned out very well, except for this one. I'll take more later to actually show it off. Maybe I'll actually have a waist in them. Also that lady in the background.<br />
<br />
Just look at my last post for some of the progress images and then use your imagination.<br />
<br />
Basically in this process I learned that I am horrible at choosing fabrics for costumes, but also that face paint is fun. I should have learned both of these things last year.<br />
<br />
It actually came out really well. Made my first ever shirt (that you shall never see without the shoulders hiding the collar). I also learned not to start these projects in the summer. That is not enough time. Especially for a project of this scale. I did not learn this last year, either.<br />
<br />
Next year will be even better though! I shall go bigger! Much bigger! With corsets!<br />
<i>We tried on some corsets one day, and then I knew. Yes please, more of this.</i><br />
<br />
<br />
But now I am in the Fall semester, making things that are relevant for jobs and degrees and things. <a href="http://taylormariewhite.com/gallery_2d_digital.html" target="_blank">I have pictures in my gallery!</a><br />
<br />
It's the first 4 pieces in the top group, and the first piece in the bottom group. Lots of posters and ads and websites and all sorts of career things.<br />
<br />
Making websites at work is fun. Soon I shall design my own for them! It will be grand. I just brought up the fact that we need to get started on the redesign, so hopefully we can jump into ideas and things next week.<br />
<br />
But my portfolio simply displays the fact that I built <a href="http://the%20sentinel%20website./" target="_blank">The Sentinel website.</a> It basically runs my life right now.<br />
But it's pretty fun.<br />
Sign up for the E-Edition over on the right! The very first one gets sent out on the 16th!<br />
<br />
<br />
I sign off with this shameless plug.<br />

Which is good (or maybe bad?) because there are only 13 days until Dragon*Con!<br />
<br />
I'm not really sure how well my fabric paint will stick to the fabric I used for my shoulder piece, but I worked really hard on that design, so I hope it stays!<br />
Also I followed the instructions on the bottle.<br />
Very important.<br />
<br />
<img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-WcOwM-sWG68/UC64fVPkmqI/AAAAAAAAAug/rP84P3f0SdM/s320/photo+1+(5).JPG" width="240" />
<br />
This design is nuts, but I finally got the hang of it!<br />
<br />
<img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-BAXnZ7hHQKs/UC64gfsUYrI/AAAAAAAAAuw/549vZplKmw8/s320/photo+3+(5).JPG" width="240" />
<br />
Cutting it out was not fun, however.<br />
<br />
<img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-QgO65vBD8m0/UC64g1H-GPI/AAAAAAAAAu4/NAIEcloOIP4/s320/photo+4+(4).JPG" width="240" />
<br />
There was probably a more professional way to do this, but my technique was to make a stencil, and then lay down masking tape on the open parts. After cutting it all out, (again) the tape was left on the fabric so that I could sponge my paint around it.<br />
<br />
<img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-zbVRVOFJIV0/UC64hHSm4uI/AAAAAAAAAvA/vXOQJHNA6bg/s320/photo+5+(5).JPG" width="240" /><br />
Anyway, it worked like a charm. And I still have the big stencil in case I want to go in with paint--or the tape--again.<br />
<br />
Also behold my bag!<br />
<br />
Speaking of which, I remember now that the shoulders need the large stitching across the seams. UGH.<br />
<br />
<br />
Well that shouldn't take long. Then I have to work on the rest of the costume, which is <i>really </i>daunting.<br />
<img border="0" height="361" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-cYb2GPiv0HE/UC6_0ePtC7I/AAAAAAAAAvU/BfiGUkQpE2c/s400/costume_boots.jpg" width="400" /><br />
Even though I already have those boots!<br />
And by that I mean I went to Radiant Raiment and found my character some boots that looked like the ones that I already own.<br />
<br />
So anyway, now I've gotta make that shirt, which I found a pretty good pattern for. Though, I'll have to fix up the collar a bit. Which will be fine I guess. I did the same look on the shoulders, as well as the collar on my costume from last year.<br />
<br />
But UGH I really do not want to make that shirt at all. I've never made a shirt before!<br />
<br />
And thennnn I have to make the tunic-y thing. I already have the fabric cut out, so I sort of just have to tack the pieces together.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-RrLtVDyTSkk/UC7Go9LgrgI/AAAAAAAAAvo/Mts6xlrtc_o/s1600/buckle.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="299" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-RrLtVDyTSkk/UC7Go9LgrgI/AAAAAAAAAvo/Mts6xlrtc_o/s320/buckle.jpg" width="320" /></a>
<br />
After that (or before, since I don't want to make the shirt!) will be the buckle. I was going to try to actually repousse it into metal like a boss, but I'm such a noob at that that I figured I would just go with mesh and plaster cloth, or Sculpey.<br />
I feel like either of those will be quicker, and more guaranteed for success. I don't have time to use metal. Nor do I have chasing tools. And I really don't feel like trying to work on custuming stuff in the sculpture studio.<br />
<br />
One thing I'm excited about for this year, is wearing that red face paint!<br />
I bought some (rather expensive) face paint from Joann Fabrics, but it comes of REALLY easy with water. And I'm going to be sweating all over the place. And my makeup seal didn't do much.<br />
<br />
But the paint that I was going to use last year--and didn't--stays on really well. I just need to buy a red version.<br />
<br />
<br />
Well, I only have 2 weeks to get all this done.<br />
*cry*<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Oh. I also finished my third project from my summer class.<br />
<a href="http://students.kennesaw.edu/~twhite61/project_3/team.html" target="_blank">This is the page I made that leads to my other team members' pages. And then the "Laura Smith" link leads to the rest of my site!</a><br />

<br />
First things first. That short animation project I did at the beginning of the semester has long since been finished, so I shall show it to you!<br />
<br />
I have yet to set up my website to display my flash animations in a way where the whole gallery is consistent. Buuut I can just post the links for now.<br />
<br />
Well I guess I just post screenshots of the animations and give a link to them in the description....<br />
<br />
HMMMM.<br />
I'll work on that later.<br />
<br />
But I have a lot of things that need to go in my gallery so it's not just the animations that I need to post. I also need to clean up a few old iron pour pieces and re-hot glue my styrofoam sculpture and ...others, I think. So I guess I'm just being lazy about my gallery altogether because I know that there are a few things that I need to do.<br />
<br />
<br />
Anyway--LINKS!<br />
<a href="http://taylormariewhite.com/websites/flash_project_1/project_1_taylorwhite" target="_blank">Project One</a><br />
<a href="http://taylormariewhite.com/websites/flash_project_2" target="_blank">Project Two</a><br />
<br />
Project Three is currently in progress, so you may not see it!<br />
<br />
So project 1 turned out awesome. The music was a total last second decision. I just searched through my silly songs from various video game soundtracks and picked an upbeat one that was the correct length. Though that didn't matter much since it still just fades out in the end.<br />
Anyway it was totally perfect since it picks up at just the right moments.<br />
<br />
Oh yes.<br />
<br />
<br />
Project 2 was okay. It looks the way I wanted it to, but it's very much not as interactive as I wanted it to be. The illustrations took longer than I thought, and basically it just isn't as good as a flash website should be.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Luckily our last project is another website, and this one is going to be AWESOME. Everything will move and be interactive and you'll all love it.<br />
<br />
Here's a sneak peak:<br />

<br />
I am taking two summer classes, Adobe Flash and Marketing, and I need to get started on my Dragon*Con costume.<br />
<br />
Flash, for one, is very time consuming. We have long assignments due every week day and fairly large projects about every 3 weeks. Weekends don't give much relief.<br />
<br />
I'm pretty excited about my current project though. It's a 20sec TV commercial, and I've never used Flash before, and I've made a very complicated storyboard. I'll post some of those as soon as I figure out the method with which I want to do so. It's very difficult and due in about 4 days.<br />
<br />
<br />
Marketing is pretty much the same as Flash as far as the number of assignments goes. Summer classes are so jam-packed, it's a little crazy.<br />
<br />
<br />
Regardless of all the mess that I need to get done for school, I've realized that I'm quickly running out of time for costuming and have started planning for that. I have until August 31 to finish everything.<br />
<br />
I think my goal is pretty simple sewing-wise (compared to <a href="http://taylormariewhite-blog.blogspot.com/2011/08/sewing-machines-are-my-anti-drug.html" target="_blank">last year</a>), but the planning stage is taking longer than I thought it would.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-C2wUsdb2XMc/T9P3xkzMEtI/AAAAAAAAAt8/Rvo_9UPFTwY/s1600/vozreni_1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-C2wUsdb2XMc/T9P3xkzMEtI/AAAAAAAAAt8/Rvo_9UPFTwY/s320/vozreni_1.jpg" width="197" /></a>
<br />
<br />
So I'm making this sexy lady, and I really need to make sure my fabric choices are a little wiser this time around. Also the colors are very weird and specific, so I'll be putting my dyeing skills to the test!<br />
<br />
She has a staff, but I'll probably not even do it at all.<br />
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-RV1XX7SEKio/T9P4-BqZjYI/AAAAAAAAAuE/k6Bk6uJMxxI/s1600/staff_of_flames.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-RV1XX7SEKio/T9P4-BqZjYI/AAAAAAAAAuE/k6Bk6uJMxxI/s1600/staff_of_flames.png" /></a>
<br />
<br />
If I had more time, it would be a possibility. Get my sculpture on.<br />
But as of right now, I really do not think so.<br />
<br />
On the bright side, props are really annoying when walking around the Con. Even though it would be flippin' sweet.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />

My bowl. That was the 3rd project of the class.<br />
Before that I had done 2 forged bracelets. One a simple faceted bangle, and another bracelet of our own design.<br />
<br />
I think I shall photograph those and get them in my gallery<br />
<br />
I think the only reason I hesitated was because they aren't entirely complete.<br />
The bangle is a little small to fit over my hand, and the 2nd bracelet--I feel--needs a few more components.<br />
<br />
However, since I don't feel like I will be working on them any time soon, I think I'll just post them and fix them up later.<br />
<br />
I am incredibly proud of both of them, and feel like sharing them with the world! I'll see if I can't have them cleaned up and photographed by the end of the day.<br />
<br />
__5/9/12 Update__<br />
<br />
I have now posted them! <a href="http://taylormariewhite.com/gallery_3d.html" target="_blank">Go see!</a>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05458756729114685560noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2186252782670146063.post-48461099620011000852012-04-26T23:50:00.000-04:002012-04-26T23:50:10.078-04:00Slightly More CompleteFirst things first. also my box made it onto school tv!<br />
<br />
<br />
So next Monday marks the last day of classes. I've already finished one class, now I just have 3 more!<br />
<br />
Just today I turned in my photography project [<a href="http://taylormariewhite.com/gallery_photography.html" target="_blank">already in my gallery</a>] and it went pretty well. We also had to write and artist statement to go with it. For some reason it's really hard to keep my artist statements short. I guess I love talking about myself too much...<br />
<br />
Anyway, so now I just need to finish my final Typography project (due on Monday), take my Tuesday Art History exam, and take my marketing exam online sometime next week. I'm aiming towards Wednesday...<br />
<br />
<br />
I don't even see this as the end of the semester. I've been looking at everything day by day, that I haven't really taken into account that I only have 3 days left!<br />
<br />
Crazy crazy.<br />
<br />
I am, however, definitely looking forward to doing awesome crafts during the summer! I have a lot of unfinished projects that really need to be finished...<br />
<br />

My last photography project and not quite finishing my typography book...<div><br /></div><div>Wellll I've started the very last photography project, and there was one more in between this one and the one in my other post. </div><div><br /></div><div>That one was called Appropriations. Copying a style of art or the work of a certain artist. I found Laszlo Moholy-Nagy's artwork, and I copied a few of them, and got creative with a few others. They came out pretty neat actually.</div><div><br /></div><div>[<a href="http://taylormariewhite.com/gallery_photography.html">Images in the gallery, as always.</a>] </div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>I finished my Typography book (and got a pretty good grade on it too!) and submitting my portfolio to get into my concentration was successful seeing as how I got in! The book isn't in my gallery yet, but it will be at some point. Actually, I should work on that.</div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>I'm pretty pumped because I only have 1 project / exam left in each of my classes! Plus my incomplete metals class, but once I actually sit down and start working on it, it should go fairly quickly.</div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>I'm really excited about my next photography project, actually. It's called "Sense of Place," and since I'm moving into my first apartment this weekend I figured that that would be the perfect subject! Pretty good timing. :D</div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>The next few semesters--once this one is done--are going to be pretty awesome I think. I got a few digital art-related classes and some marketing classes and some art history classes. I'm hoping that with the few breaks that I get between semesters and maymesters that I can finish all of the sewing projects I've started. I really need that new purse...</div><div><br /></div><div>Also the next few months are all about web development skills. I found a cool site that walks you through javascript, and it's pretty easy to handle so far, but I want all of the web dev skills!</div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>So that's basically it so far. As far as a quick overview goes. I bet if I posted more often I could go into more details... Hmm...</div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>_______</div>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05458756729114685560noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2186252782670146063.post-80461381454233458912012-03-16T03:35:00.005-04:002012-04-13T00:01:22.513-04:00Photography and College CareersPhotography critique number 2 is complete! <div>{Pictures in the <a href="http://taylormariewhite.com/gallery_photography.html">gallery</a>}</div><div><br /></div><div>It went pretty well, actually. Everyone liked the blur and the drama. They didn't, however, like one photo I had of a bird feeder shot through the blinds, since it didn't look enough like a window and everyone thought the character was walking back outside.</div><div>So the professor took it out to see if the narrative was better without it (and of course it was) so I promptly snuck it out of the pile of projects to be graded and brought it right back home.</div><div><br /></div><div>So that was very nice. My lovely boyfriend made a very nice model and all the pictures turned out great!</div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>So... I have mapped out the rest of my semesters, plotted my classes, and predicted my graduation to be in Spring 2014. </div><div>I must say that if you want to be an art major, start your studio classes as quickly as you can, so you won't be here for 6 years like me. </div><div><br /></div><div>But that's fine. I have a lot of room to take useful classes that don't really fit into my degree. I really wanted to take a few more sculpture classes, but most importantly some web development classes. And, if I laid it out correctly, I think I have a few semesters that have room for some fun stuff. And by fun, I mean, subjects that I feel will greatly benefit me in the long run.</div><div>Well, the sculpture class is just for fun, but I want it the most!</div><div><br /></div><div>Not much else new. My 16-page book is due in 2 weeks, so I'll try to get images of that up around then. Unfortunately, after seeing some examples from previous semesters, mine needs a serious overhaul. </div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>_______</div>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05458756729114685560noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2186252782670146063.post-54304913562310060732012-03-02T01:05:00.008-05:002012-03-02T01:37:48.487-05:004 Days of Structure-less School Work<span><span style="font-size: 100%; ">Yeah, spring break started today and I am sooo glad. I still have work, but that's fine. I'm just glad I don't have any assignments due on Monday. </span></span><div style="font-size: 100%; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: normal; "><span><br /></span></div><div style="font-size: 100%; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: normal; "><span>Actually Monday is going to be my relax day since I work and have school 24/7 and can never ever stop.</span></div><div style="font-size: 100%; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: normal; "><span><br /></span></div><div style="font-size: 100%; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: normal; "><span>But yes. This semester is ridonkulous. When I'm not slaving away at 16-page typography-based books, I'm taking black and white photos and working on online classes and studying art history for 7 hours.</span></div><div style="font-size: 100%; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: normal; "><span><br /></span></div><div style="font-size: 100%; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: normal; "><span>Actually I've managed to catch up considerably in the last week just in time to be able to chill for a while.</span></div><div style="font-size: 100%; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: normal; "><span><br /></span></div><div style="font-size: 100%; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: normal; "><span>My book is looking a lot better than my plans did in the beginning. The professor did enjoy coming over to the computer and hiding my images to see how interesting my text was though. It was sort of irritating, but my text was super boring, so I'm glad that was pointed out sooner rather than later. I've basically surrendered myself to the learning process and have relaxed enough to encourage any feedback I can get to help me out. </span></div><div style="font-size: 100%; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: normal; "><span>So we'll see what happens in the next week when I try to execute what I was told to do.</span></div><div style="font-size: 100%; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: normal; "><span>Here's a sneak peek of what is to come!</span></div><div style="font-size: 100%; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: normal; "><span><br /></span></div><div style="font-size: 100%; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: normal; "><span>A bar graph made out of thread!</span></div><div style="font-size: 100%; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: normal; "><span><img src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-scPZjPGb65k/T1BnctumS5I/AAAAAAAAAkE/ePxNnu03nx4/s320/bar_graph.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5715181670142200722" style="font-size: 100%; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 213px; " /></span></div><div style="font-size: 100%; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: normal; "><span><br /></span></div><div style="font-size: 100%; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: normal; ">A map of New York!</div><div style="font-size: 100%; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: normal; "><img src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-2Fyh8pLml8M/T1Bp85EIx0I/AAAAAAAAAk0/D-ekKuvLjig/s320/Picture%2B1.png" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5715184421964400450" style="font-size: 100%; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 150px; " /></div><div style="font-size: 100%; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: normal; "><span><br /></span></div><div><span><span style="font-size: 100%;">...Very </span>intriguing<span style="font-size: 100%;">!</span></span></div><div style="font-size: 100%; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: normal; "><span><br /></span></div><div style="font-size: 100%; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: normal; "><span><br /></span></div><div style="font-size: 100%; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: normal; "><span>Photography is pretty cool, though. She has a whole lot less to do than I do, but that's only because I beat mine so hard trying to get it to do what I want that it basically died and I want to start fresh. So my forged bowl is basically all I have now. Also we'll see on Tuesday just how much metal I have left and what I actually have to work with. But I do have an awesome game plan, so hopefully it will go smoother than last time. (Sometimes advise from professors makes things sooo much easier on you! But so far I have learned a heck of a lot about layouts. We have a 16-page booklet coming up, and if I'm not a pro at laying out a butt-load of text and images by the time that's done, then I don't know what will do it.<br /><br />Photography is pretty fun. I'm taking it since images are very important in graphic design and businesses, so I thought I'd learn to make my own. But we have a lot of photos and prints due all the time, so it's crazy to keep up with.<br /><br />Art history is super interesting, but the memorization is not that awesome. But art history is how I learn my world history, so it's good to nerd out in there.<br /><br />Marketing is pretty demanding. The chapters are super long, and we don't have much time after we submit one response before we have to read the next two chapters and write about those. And so far it's just a bunch of economics, but I'm hoping I'll pick up some things that will help me in my career.<br /><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>Outside of school, I finally finished and uploaded my new website design. I've got my own server space and everything so the URL's are nice and pretty! I've also added my latest graphic design assignments to my 2D Digital Art gallery. </div><div>Check everything out here! --> <a href="http://www.taylormariewhite.com/">www.taylormariewhite.com</a></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>_______</div>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05458756729114685560noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2186252782670146063.post-13552601749611933342012-01-18T15:56:00.006-05:002012-02-09T02:17:41.370-05:00Getting Stuff DoneFirst on my list of things to start and then continue doing on a regular basis:<br /><ul><li><span style="font-weight: bold;">Set up my acetylene torch.</span> I received the final piece to my metalworking setup and hopefully sometime soon (since I got it for Christmas and it's still not done) I will be in my garage making cool things that need to be very hot for a while.</li><li><span style="font-weight: bold;">Finish my purse.</span> My old purse was the greatest thing that ever happened to me and it sadly fell apart. It was actually pretty low quality but it fit everything that I needed and was super colorful and adorable. Sooo I bought some of my favorite fabrics and started up a replacement that will do everything my old one did. Only better. It is still quite a puzzle so I don't get very far by the end of each day.<br /></li><li>As far as websites go, I did <span style="font-weight: bold;">design a whole new layout</span> and color scheme and all that good jazz. That wasn't my original plan though. I'd hoped to first just get off of my school's server and therefore have more professional looking URLs.<br />However in my attempts to upload my new files, I deleted the old ones and was not able to replace them. So now I just want any website at all. Though I'm pretty sure <span style="font-weight: bold;">getting onto a new server</span> will solve all my problems, so I basically just need to do that. Quickly. My website just says "Not found" which is really not cool.</li><li>In preparation for this summer when I want to have either internships or new jobs, I will need to <span style="font-weight: bold;">start teaching myself web design-y things.</span> Mostly Javascript and... others that I forget. Anyway Javascript is hard, so I've hardly focused on it at all, let alone any others.</li><li>This one has nothing to do with my professional career, but I really need to <span style="font-weight: bold;">learn how to cook quick healthy things.</span> The holidays were nice because I did not hesitate to pull out cookbooks and try things / cook the same things over and over because I know I like them (but it was still stuff that I made myself, and the ingredients for all of them together were cheaper than a weeks worth of the other crap I usually buy).<br />Anyway, I'm back to the convenient crap I usually buy and it makes me really sad. Both schools were pouring molds and the audience could buy a scratch block and watch it get poured. </div><div><br /></div><div><img src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-mzPtwnl8HKU/TubQlbskVnI/AAAAAAAAAcw/_ea-dv5YmbE/s400/DSC_6973.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5685460921110255218" style="cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 266px; " /></div><div><br /></div><div>This day was especially exciting for me, because when it was my turn to carry the ladle, I told my partner that I wanted to be the Driver.</div><div><br /></div><div>So I was. </div><div><br /></div><div>Basically I was in charge of tipping the bucket over and filling up the molds, as well as moving it around and not spilling it all over the place. </div><div><br /></div><div>I did pretty well. When the iron was being poured into the ladle while we were holding it, I got slightly discouraged since it was heavy as crap, but we then poured half of it into the other group's ladle so they could work on molds too.</div><div><br /></div><div>Me holding the live end of the ladle as it's being filled up:</div><div><img src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-DB39s2_rXM8/TubQj5BXZLI/AAAAAAAAAcY/XOmfTZ1zPWE/s400/DSC_6927.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5685460894622377138" style="cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 266px; " /></div><div><br /></div><div>Anyway we made our way over to the first mold after dancing around all the people who were in our way, and I poured it pretty smoothly. I stopped prematurely on the ones I managed to get to since I couldn't tell if they were full or not and had to wait for "Good!" when I was hoping for a "keep going..." kinda thing. </div><div><br /></div><div>I'm leaning over behind the girl with the green patch on her jacket, but I'm doing the exact same thing as the girl in the very middle up at the top:</div><div><img src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-KzXFh5jvYsY/TubQkumx2aI/AAAAAAAAAck/PnPN5YhkQqA/s400/DSC_6934.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5685460909006379426" style="cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 266px; " /></div><div><br /></div><div>You have to hold the ladle in the position like the one in the picture above until you finish filling the mold. I only got to three molds since my arms could not handle it anymore and I passed it off to my backup. Which is why they're there. Which is good. </div><div><br /></div><div>Basically that was all I did. I wished I had another job to do after, like shovel or backup for someone else, but there were so many people that only a few people got to do something twice.</div></div><div><br /></div><div>The whole day was a bunch of fun. I was super nervous being live end, and I chose to do it, but I couldn't not do it. It worked out in the end though. I think. I don't know the results of my pouring abilities. </div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>_______</div>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05458756729114685560noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2186252782670146063.post-50623057884960277762011-12-05T02:20:00.013-05:002011-12-05T04:14:14.430-05:00Finals Week<div>So yesterday was iron pour training. I got my mold all set up and then I was given the task of breaking more some iron.</div><div><br /></div><div>So I got my sledge hammer thing--the kind that you just sort of drop / slam onto the ground instead of swinging it at things--and broke myself up some radiator pieces. And also worked my arms and obliques. </div><div><br /></div><img src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ENXffQiQM7w/Ttx4_Pb-F3I/AAAAAAAAAbs/JoPUKXzoriU/s400/photo%2B3%2B%25282%2529.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5682549857705662322" style="cursor: pointer; width: 300px; height: 400px; " /><div><br /></div><div>With a few other people we managed to get 3 piles, but they never ended up being used in the pour, so that's awesome.<br /><div><br /><div><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-OEjERurhY5I/Ttx4_91oVjI/AAAAAAAAAb0/ELNZcVtM1f8/s400/photo%2B5%2B%25282%2529.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5682549870161319474" /></div><div><br /></div><div><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-CgGP5qIHuvA/Ttx5DugchbI/AAAAAAAAAcA/f_cc74dyimE/s1600/photo%2B4.JPG" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-CgGP5qIHuvA/Ttx5DugchbI/AAAAAAAAAcA/f_cc74dyimE/s400/photo%2B4.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5682549934765409714" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>Anyway, when it was time to pour, we all got suited up and assigned positions. The boys all got to go first, so they got all the molds except one, and so two other girls and I were left with the last mold.</div><div><br /></div><div>I was given 'dead end,' which I wanted, and the other girls were given shovels. </div><div><br /></div><div>If you watch the video I posted in my last blog <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=Rrpn7jWddjI">[here]</a> of the advanced students pouring, I had the job of to holding the bucket, but I'm on the side with the one handle. The 'live end' has two handles so she can angle it and pour the iron out.</div><div><br /></div><div>Anyway, so they're pouring the iron into the bucket while we hold it, and it's very heavy as it's being filled with lava and blobs of it are splashing and bouncing off of our leathers, but we carry it over to the skimmer to scrape out all the crap that floats to the top.</div><div><br /></div><div>Anyway as we're picking the bucket back up, we weren't entirely synced and I didn't expect it to be quite as heavy as it was so slipped slightly and one of the professors came in to help me carry it a ways.</div><div><br /></div><div>But once we got to the mold it was easy. There was smoke everywhere, but I could just rest my elbow on my leg while the live end filled the mold. We then dumped out the excess, set it back on the stand and that was it!</div><div><br /></div><div>The iron pour this Saturday is going to be a lot more intense because we will have many many molds and the furnace will be constantly getting hotter while we're carrying heavy things in our leathers, that it will basically just be work. </div><div><br /></div><div>I also need to get my last mold put together before then. Don't know when that's going to happen...</div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>In other metal news, my box showed up on the Metalsmithing poster! Yay me.</div><div><br /><img src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-EjHVbFo_8-E/Ttx49sMnB0I/AAAAAAAAAbE/bycmwu02AKo/s400/photo%2B%25282%2529.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5682549831066126146" style="cursor: pointer; width: 300px; height: 400px; " /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>Other than that I'm pretty much just working on my wood sculpture. </div><div><br /></div><div>I have since taken a die grinder to it, so it's slightly slimmer and smoother, but not by much. I have a whole lot left to do.<br /><br /></div><div><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-E_iNVvoVLd0/Ttx4-ze9Q0I/AAAAAAAAAbc/PlxwG2fuF7E/s1600/photo%2B2%2B%25282%2529.JPG" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-E_iNVvoVLd0/Ttx4-ze9Q0I/AAAAAAAAAbc/PlxwG2fuF7E/s400/photo%2B2%2B%25282%2529.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5682549850201998146" /></a></div><div><br /><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-UwpWwt2PKvk/Ttx4-F7uQXI/AAAAAAAAAbU/P2XtGB8EBbw/s1600/IMG_0240.JPG" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-UwpWwt2PKvk/Ttx4-F7uQXI/AAAAAAAAAbU/P2XtGB8EBbw/s400/IMG_0240.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5682549837974618482" /></a></div><div><br /><br />My metals project is also due next Monday, but it's still just a bowl at this point.</div></div></div><div><br /></div><div>My legs are really sore right now :P</div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>_______</div>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05458756729114685560noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2186252782670146063.post-47178927390046833072011-11-20T23:41:00.003-05:002011-11-21T02:39:26.738-05:00Lava in Buckets (Video)Video footage of the advanced sculpture students and the foundry students pouring iron. I have joined the Pour team at school, and in preparation for the GA State Iron Pour we have safety training!</div><div><br /></div><div>The noobs didn't get to pour today, only watch. So I got awesome pictures! I also shot some videos and will upload those at some point.</div><div><br /></div><div>Anyway, the first step before we set up the furnace and things is to actually have a mold to practice on.</div><div><br /></div><div>My class and I had some we'd made around dry ceramic clay, but they didn't slide out like we'd planned, so we had to break them out.</div><div><br /></div><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-34_ciaY9hco/TsmAZP47AfI/AAAAAAAAAXI/R6pYftciJJY/s400/IMG_0164.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5677209976527585778" /><div><br /></div><div>Dumb!</div><div><br /></div><div><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-vpKiCheXqp0/TsmAZaRAJfI/AAAAAAAAAXY/oz7VasCH1Zc/s400/IMG_0165.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5677209979312940530" /></div><div><br /></div><div>Then, we bind them up and put the pour cup and vents on them. You have to make sure that both the mold and the cup are flush against each other when you glue them together. The video will show some of the iron leaking out of gaps in some of the molds. (But not mine!)</div><div><br /></div><div><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Rt9ipqI8TLk/TsmAZ-ENIRI/AAAAAAAAAXg/n8ogtTaY6_Q/s400/IMG_0166.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5677209988922941714" /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>Then it's time to heat up the furnace!</div><div><br /></div><div><img src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-4MdZ_Ugmk54/TsmPiIunNSI/AAAAAAAAAZM/NSFhF7AGDn4/s400/IMG_0170.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5677226621898536226" style="cursor: pointer; width: 300px; height: 400px; " /></div><div><br /></div><div><img src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-rsbDZYj1d6c/TsmPizIB9XI/AAAAAAAAAZk/nC3nvCA-5ZI/s400/IMG_0178.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5677226633279436146" style="cursor: pointer; width: 300px; height: 400px; " /></div><div><br /></div><div>Then at a certain point we add the small pieces of iron and fuel (called coke) and the metal melts down...</div><div><br /></div><div><img src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-QyPkfhQD5L4/TsmAZ2IxhWI/AAAAAAAAAXw/IYoBHkIiDv4/s400/IMG_0194.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5677209986794620258" style="cursor: pointer; width: 300px; height: 400px; " /></div><div><br />...then you pour it in the buckets!<br /><br /><img src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-hMjOMyqdTgo/TsmBLylRH7I/AAAAAAAAAYE/jTuxr7dH98s/s400/IMG_0218.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5677210844833849266" style="cursor: pointer; width: 300px; height: 400px; " /></div><div><br /></div><div>The pros went first and poured some of the scratch blocks.</div><div><br /></div><div><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-pQVmZ0gl9Q8/TsmAaZoVIwI/AAAAAAAAAX4/m7i1TH1ti2g/s400/IMG_0201.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5677209996322218754" /></div><div><br /></div><div>Here's the molds where the iron leaked out the sides all over the place. It's pretty neat. We start off with a completely flat sheet of metal, and essentially hammer it until it's a bowl. </div><div><br /></div><div>There's a little technique involved, but that's basically it.</div><div><br /></div><div>It's kind of awesome, though. You have to hammer every inch of the metal, overlapping your strokes slightly, in a circular pattern from the inside out. </div><div><br /></div><div>And then you do that 10 times. Or at least until the bowl is 3 inches deep.</div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>There's also 4 of us in the class sharing one anvil.</div><br /><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-GGQgSot4Oeo/TrOAR2U3odI/AAAAAAAAAT4/ngSnMrSDvqw/s1600/hammering.JPG" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 299px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-GGQgSot4Oeo/TrOAR2U3odI/AAAAAAAAAT4/ngSnMrSDvqw/s400/hammering.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5671017399918764498" /></a><div><br /><div><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 299px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-VLk16fpbqS4/TrOASaiLIFI/AAAAAAAAAUE/gw7BVQpa0nE/s400/hammering2.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5671017409638244434" /></div><div><br /></div><div>Luckily in between each round you have to bouge it on the mushroom stake to make it not an oval, hammer the inside on the sand bag to make it not lumpy, anneal it to make it hammerable again, pickle it to make it not covered in firescale, and cross peen the edges to thicken them. </div><div>Then you can hammer again.</div><div><br /></div><div>So the whole 3 people at once thing just happened that one time. </div><div>Well, we do all have about 8 more rounds left, so it'll actually probably happen again.</div><div><br /></div><div><img src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6OBpiYZOagA/TrOATRTtp-I/AAAAAAAAAUc/Z2Qmx2wpu_8/s400/photo%2B2.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5671017424341542882" style="cursor: pointer; width: 300px; height: 400px; " /></div><div><br /></div><div>Ze hammer!
